Pamplin+ Curriculum

As part of the Pamplin+ curriculum, Pamplin College of Business students will complete:

Four Business Cohort Courses: BUS 1004, BUS 2004, BUS 3004, and BUS 4004.
Two Experiential Learning Requirements: BUS 3900 and BUS 3754 (unless satisfied by a major-specific course - ACIS majors fulfill this requirement by completion of BUS 3900 and ACIS 3714 or ACIS 3754 or ACIS 4714).
Coursework designed to develop skills in the following areas:
- AI Literacy for Business (BUS 1204)
- Entrepreneurship & Innovation
- Communication
- Ethics & Law
- Global Marketplace
- Service/Resilience

In some majors, students may choose from a list of approved courses to fulfill one of these skill areas; when applicable, this option is specified in the program requirements. In all other cases, these skills are embedded within required major courses.

Satisfactory Progress Towards Degree

Upon having attempted 72 semester hours (including transfer, advanced placement, advanced standing, credit by examination, course withdrawal), students must:

Be enrolled in a degree-granting program, and
Be certified at the close of the academic year by their department as making satisfactory progress toward a degree based upon preestablished minimum criteria, and
Have an in-major GPA of 2.00 or above and maintain an in-major GPA of 2.00 or above until graduation.

General Information: A total of 122 credit hours is required for graduation. Any exceptions to this curriculum must be approved by the student's department head and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs.

Department Information

Course Offerings: Not all ACIS courses are offered every semester; some are fall only, some are spring only.
All 3000-4000 level ACIS courses must be taken at Virginia Tech.
ACIS Master's: Students interested in earning a Master’s degree in Accounting and Information Systems are strongly encouraged to apply into our Accelerated MACIS (aMACIS) Program [bachelor's/master's program]. Students should apply into the aMACIS Program in the semester in which they have taken or are enrolled in ACIS 3115 and ACIS 3504 and have no more than 2 semesters remaining to complete the undergraduate degree requirements. Please contact the ACIS Department for additional information. Students who have been accepted to the aMACIS Program may double count one 5000-level ACIS course if a B or higher is earned while in the aMACIS Program. Must have MACIS advisor approval.
CPA Exam Preparation: Students planning to take the CPA Exam in VA are required to have a bachelor's degree with an accounting concentration or equivalent. An accounting concentration or equivalent is comprised of 24 SCH of accounting coursework (3 SCH of introductory or foundational accounting coursework and 21 SCH of upper-level accounting coursework) and 24 SCH of business coursework. Virginia offers 3 pathways to licensure (all 3 require an accounting concentration or equivalent and passage of the CPA Exam): 1) Master’s degree and 1 year of experience, 2) Bachelor’s degree plus 30 SCH and 1 year of experience, or 3) Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of experience. The best preparation is to obtain a master’s degree. The serious CPA exam candidate should take a reputable CPA review course. Students who plan to take the CPA Exam and/or be licensed as CPAs in states other than VA should be aware that some states have education requirements that differ from VA (consult the state board of accountancy of interest). Other Professional Certifications: Students planning to take the Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), or Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) exams should talk with the ACIS Department about specific requirements for these certifications.

Foreign Language Requirement

Students who did not successfully complete at least two years of a single foreign, classical, or sign language during high school must successfully complete six credit hours of a single foreign, classical, or sign language at the college level. Courses taken to meet this requirement may not count towards the minimum credit hours required for graduation. Please refer to the Undergraduate Catalog for details.
