SPAN 2774 - Minority Languages in the Spanish-Speaking Context (3 credits) 
Examination of language policies and practices with regard to minority languages across the Spanish-speaking context, histories of minority languages in Spanish-speaking areas, and the current socio-political situations of these languages and their speakers. Exploration of issues concerning linguistic rights, such as access to education, economic opportunities, and political status; analysis of the implications of restrictions on minority groups linguistic rights. Discussion of why some minority-language speakers have been more successful in their language conservation or revitalization efforts than others. Taught in English. Examination of films dedicated to sports—baseball, basketball, boxing, soccer, etc.—within the U.S. Latinx and Latin American contexts. Study of sports and their visual depiction in relation to concepts of nationalism, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, politics, religion, economics, health, etc. Emphasis on the analysis of narrative, rhetorical, and stylistic conventions associated with sports films. Interpretation of the role of sports films in (re)conceptualizing ideas of national and social identity, shaping human experience, expressing political ideologies, (de)constructing dominant notions of gender and sexuality, questioning “official” versions of history, addressing issues of diversity and inclusion, and contextualizing sports from different regional and cultural perspectives. In-depth analysis of the enduring cultural institutions and ideas that inform Spanish-American perceptions of reality and their development into modern times. Selected topics include: the cultural contributions of the Spanish, indigenous and African legacies; religions and syncretism; militarism and caudillismo; aesthetics; cultural regions; idiosyncrasies; and concepts of time and space. Essay and prose fiction readings will be complemented by lectures, discussions, and films. Taught in Spanish. Pre: Graduate standing and advanced language skills in Spanish.

This is a special topics, variable content course that allows the students to explore different geographical regions of Spanish America and the ways that authors have used literature to preserve, recreate, revise, subvert, and even contradict their countries official history. All discussion conducted in Spanish. May be repeated for credit up to three times. Pre: minimum oral proficiency of Advanced on the ACTFL scale; and graduate standing.
