FL 2744 - AI and Global Languages (3 credits)

Exploration of how artificial intelligence processes and generates human language. Examination of how AI technologies shape culture, identity, and meaning in multilingual settings. Evaluation of the accuracy, style, and cultural appropriateness of AI-generated translations. Production of original multilingual texts by generating, editing, and refining outputs from large language models (LLMs). Analysis of the ethical, cultural, and pedagogical implications of AI-generated language through critical reflection and case-based inquiry. No programming experience required. Taught in English. No knowledge of other languages required.

FL 2774 - Multilingualism and Language Contact (3 credits)

Exploration of multilingualism as a social and linguistic phenomenon. Examination of language practices in multilingual contexts around the world. Analysis of current socio-political policies pertaining to language in situations of language contact. Discussion of linguistic rights, such as economic opportunities, education, and national languages, and their connection to world affairs. Exploration of language revitalization efforts for endangered languages. Taught in English.

FL 5024 - Area Studies Methods (3 credits)

Introduction to recent theories and methods in history, foreign languages and literary studies, and geography with a focus on issues that have facilitated exchanges between the three disciplines. Practical aspects of Area Studies research are highlighted with particular reference to Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe. The formulation of research problems using interdisciplinary approaches is given special attention. Graduate standing required.

FL 5114 - Applied Linguistics (3 credits)

This course examines the practical study of human language. It explores what language is, what its components and functions are, how it is used, and how it is learned. The course will be taught in English, with the exploration of multiple examples from different languages, especially French and Spanish. Graduate standing required. Minimum intermediate proficiency in French or Spanish as determined by the instructor at the beginning of the course or permission.

FL 5134 - Language Learning & Pedagogy (3 credits)

Examination of theories of language acquisition/learning and practical approaches to teaching languages in higher education classrooms, based on recent theories and research. Students will examine, critique, and emulate models of teaching of languages, and conduct a research study of teaching practices. Prerequisite: Graduate Standing required

FL 5174 - Ethics, Professional Practice, and Policy in Foreign Languages and Cultures (3 credits)

Ethical issues and the academic, business, and institutional practices related to language scholarship, language-related professions, and international settings. Language policy, development studies, sociology of language, linguistics, translation, and translation theory. Inclusion and diversity in teaching, learning, and research. Pre: Graduate standing.

FL 5334 - Topics in Foreign Language Cinema (3 credits)

This variable content course will explore the directors, films and institutions of a national or transnational cinema tradition. The course may be taught in English, or in the language of the films to be studied. Examples of topics: Francophone Cinema, French New Wave Film, Post-Franco Spanish Film or Latin America Cinema. Students will view films, read related criticism and film theory, and will write detailed critiques and analyses. May be repeated with different content for a total of nine hours. Graduate standing required. When the course is taught in a foreign language, advanced language skills as determined by instructor.
