Topics in soil genesis of regional interest will be addressed. This is a one-week field course that will rotate each year among four regions in the northeastern United States. The regions are Virginia-Maryland, Pennsylvania-West Virginia, New York, and the New England states. This will provide students the opportunity to observe and study soils in the field over a much broader geographic area that otherwise is not possible in a conventional semester course. The principles of plant competition and succession during the establishment and maintenance of herbaceous species and communities are interrelated to soil, biotic, and microclimatic factors and their interactions. Ecological and nutritional principles embodying plant and animal factor in the utilization of herbaceous plants by livestock are established. Research methodology in grassland systems is presented.
